Handmade Norozi chappal in brown genuine leather – Wahjee

Balochi vs Norozi vs Peshawari Chappal: Which One Is Right for You?

Traditional chappals are part of everyday life in Pakistan. People wear them to the office on Fridays, to weddings, for Eid prayers and on relaxed evenings. But if you are shopping online, the names can be confusing. What is the difference between a Balochi chappal, a Norozi chappal and a Peshawari chappal, and which one should you buy?

At Wahjee, we sell all three, made by hand in Quetta. This guide explains how they differ, so you can choose the pair that suits your style, comfort and occasion.

Balochi Chappal (Chawat): Light, Colourful and Rooted in Balochistan

The Balochi chappal, also called the chawat, is the traditional footwear of Balochistan. It is known for its open, airy design and its handcrafted details: braided straps, woven patterns, rosettes and, in women's styles, bright wool pom poms.

What it's made of: Wahjee's men's Balochi chawat sandals are made from suede (sabar) leather with a soft cushioned insole and a durable tyre sole. The women's styles use colourful pom poms and braided straps on a comfortable base.

Best for:

  • Everyday wear in warm weather
  • Cultural events, Balochi Culture Day and festive gatherings
  • Anyone who wants traditional footwear with colour and character

Style tip: A beige or tan chawat goes well with white or light-coloured shalwar kameez. Bolder colours like maroon or multicolour embroidered designs stand out at festive occasions.

Norozi Chappal: Classic, Sturdy and Built to Last

The Norozi chappal is a favourite for men who want a more structured, formal look. It has a closed toe area with wide leather straps, and its heavy tyre sole makes it one of the most durable traditional chappals you can own.

What it's made of: Wahjee's Norozi chappals are made from genuine leather, with a soft leather insole and a thick tyre sole. They come in classic black and brown.

Best for:

  • Daily wear, including long hours on your feet
  • Office wear with shalwar kameez
  • Jummah, Eid and family gatherings
  • Men who want a chappal that holds its shape for years

Style tip: Black Norozi chappals look sharp with darker kameez colours like navy, charcoal and black. Brown is more versatile and suits almost every outfit.

Peshawari Chappal: The Timeless Classic

The Peshawari chappal comes from Peshawar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and it is one of the most recognised traditional footwear styles in South Asia. It has a distinctive look, with overlapping leather straps across the front and a strap at the back.

What it's made of: Wahjee's Peshawari chappal is made from brown genuine leather with a soft leather insole and a durable tyre sole.

Best for:

  • Weddings, mehndi and formal family events
  • Eid and festive occasions
  • Men who want a traditional look that feels elegant and timeless

Style tip: Pair a brown Peshawari chappal with a waistcoat over your shalwar kameez for a complete festive look.

How to Choose the Right Size

Handmade chappals can fit slightly differently from factory-made shoes, so it helps to check your size before ordering:

  1. Measure your foot in the evening, when your feet are at their largest.
  2. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark your heel and longest toe, and measure the length in centimetres.
  3. Compare with your usual shoe size. Most customers order their regular Pakistani shoe size.
  4. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. Leather chappals feel snug at first and soften with wear.

Caring for Your Leather Chappals

A good pair of handmade chappals can last for years with a little care:

  • Wipe off dust with a dry, soft cloth after wearing.
  • Keep them away from long exposure to water and direct heat.
  • If they get wet, let them dry naturally in the shade, not in the sun or near a heater.
  • Use a leather conditioner or cream occasionally to keep the leather soft.
  • For suede chawat, use a soft brush to remove dust and restore the texture.
